Vallejo Mecha Gloss Varnish 27.701 (200ml) – Gloss Clear Coat for Gunpla, Mecha, and Model Kits

A gloss clear coat can completely change the final look of a model. It adds shine, deepens color, prepares the surface for decals or panel lining, and helps give finished parts a cleaner, more polished appearance. Vallejo Mecha Gloss Varnish 27.701 is designed for Gunpla, mecha kits, articulated figures, sci-fi models, and scale hobby projects that need a clear protective finish with a high-gloss look.

This 200ml bottle is a practical choice for modelers who work on larger builds, repeated varnishing sessions, commissions, display pieces, or multi-kit projects. The gloss finish is especially useful when you want colors to look richer and more vibrant, when you need a smoother surface before decals, or when you want a shiny final coat on armor panels, weapons, shields, mechanical parts, and selected model details.

Unlike regular color paint, Vallejo Mecha Gloss Varnish 27.701 is a clear finishing product. It is made to go over painted surfaces, decals, panel lining, weathering layers, or selected model parts to help unify the surface and create a consistent glossy finish. It can be applied by airbrush for smooth overall coverage or by brush for small touch-ups and targeted areas.

Why Mecha Gloss Varnish Works Well

  • High-gloss finish: Adds shine and depth to colors, making painted parts look cleaner and more polished.
  • Useful before decals and panel lining: A smooth gloss surface can help decals settle better and helps washes or panel liners flow into recessed details.
  • Great for Gunpla and mecha: A strong fit for armor panels, inner frames, weapons, shields, articulated kits, robots, sci-fi subjects, and action figures.
  • Airbrush or brush application: Can be sprayed for larger coverage or brushed onto selected details when needed.
  • High-volume 200ml bottle: A better option for modelers who varnish regularly or work on large kits, PG projects, statues, or commissions.

Beyond the Label

Vallejo Mecha Gloss Varnish 27.701 is especially useful when a model needs a richer, brighter, and more reflective finish. On Gunpla and mecha projects, gloss varnish works well on painted armor panels, metallic colors, candy-style finishes, weapons, shields, thrusters, lenses, display parts, and selected mechanical details where a clean shine improves the final presentation.

It is also useful as an intermediate coat. Many modelers apply gloss varnish before decals, oil-based panel liners, or enamel-style washes because the smoother surface helps reduce staining and makes cleanup easier. After those steps are finished, the model can stay glossy or receive a satin or matte coat depending on the final look you want.

The 200ml format is ideal when you do not want to run out during a larger project. It gives you enough varnish for repeated coats across bigger kits, multiple small models, or a full finishing workflow that includes gloss prep before decals and a final protective layer.

Pro Tips from the Studio

For best results, apply Vallejo Mecha Gloss Varnish 27.701 over fully dry paint. Use thin, even coats instead of one heavy wet coat. Heavy varnish layers can pool around panel lines, joints, vents, rivets, and raised details, especially on small mecha parts.

If you are using it before decals or panel lining, allow the gloss coat to dry properly before continuing. For airbrushing, start around 15–20 PSI and adjust based on your airbrush, needle size, spraying distance, room temperature, and the level of shine you want.

Clean your airbrush immediately after use. Varnish can build up inside the nozzle if it dries, so flushing with water first and then using Vallejo Airbrush Cleaner helps keep your equipment ready for the next session.

Safety & Handling

Always follow the safety information on the product label. Use in a well-ventilated area, close the bottle after use, and clean tools before the varnish dries.
