Vallejo Fantasy Color Primer: Bloody Red (400ml, Ref. 28.023)

The Vallejo Bloody Red spray primer, Ref. 28.023, is a colored aerosol primer developed for fantasy miniatures, wargaming armies, and scale models that need strong red coverage from the start. It combines basecoat and highly pigmented color in one step, helping you establish a solid red foundation while preserving fine surface detail. Its matt, self-levelling finish makes it especially useful when you want a smooth base for later highlights, shading, and weathering.

Because the Vallejo Bloody Red spray primer is matched to equivalent shades in Vallejo’s Game Color and Model Color ranges, it works well in workflows that mix spray priming with later brush painting. The spray color matches Vallejo Game Color Bloody Red (72.010) and is compatible with the full Game Color and Model Color range, so you can seamlessly continue with brush work after priming. The can includes two nozzles, giving you more control depending on whether you are covering a unit quickly or working on more focused detail areas. For fantasy armies, monsters, and red-heavy color schemes, Ref. 28.023 is a practical way to speed up the first painting stage without sacrificing consistency.

How to Use Vallejo Hobby Sprays

  1. Shake Well: Shake the can thoroughly for at least one full minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle.
  2. Spray Distance: Hold the can about 20–30 cm from the model and apply in short, even passes.
  3. Choose the Right Nozzle: Use the low-discharge nozzle for smaller details and the medium-flow nozzle for broader coverage.
  4. Clear the Nozzle: After use, turn the can upside down and spray briefly to help keep the nozzle clean.

For a zenithal highlight technique, try layering Bloody Red over a black primer base — spray from above at a 45° angle to let the red define the raised surfaces. Here's our complete guide to zenithal priming for miniatures.

Pro Tips for Speed-Painting Warhammer & Fantasy Armies

  • Red Basecoat Efficiency: This color is especially useful for fantasy armies, monsters, cloaks, armor panels, and red-dominant schemes that benefit from fast, even base coverage.

  • Brush-Match Advantage: Since the spray is meant to match equivalent Vallejo bottle colors, it is easier to correct details later with brush paint.

  • Surface Prep Matters: For the smoothest finish, avoid spraying in high humidity and keep passes light rather than trying to cover everything in one heavy coat.

Works straight out of the can for these armies: Bloody Red is the natural starting point for Blood Angels and other Baal-red Space Marines, Khorne Berzerkers, Chaos Daemons of Khorne, and Age of Sigmar Blades of Khorne forces. Spray the entire squad, let it dry, and your basecoat is already done.
