A Darker Foundation for Yellow

Sunburst Ochre adds a deeper and more restrained starting color to the Yellows Flexible Triad PLUS+ family.

It can be used beneath brighter yellow midtones and highlights while maintaining stronger shadows and an earthy, weathered character.

Yellows Flexible Triad PLUS+

Sunburst Ochre is the John Blanche Masterclass addition to The Army Painter Yellows Flexible Triad PLUS+ family.

It can be combined with Demigod Flames, Fiendish Yellow, Daemonic Yellow, Warped Yellow, Space Dust, and Ice Yellow to move from dark ochre shadows through saturated yellow midtones to pale highlights.

Non-Metallic Gold Reflections

The Army Painter uses Sunburst Ochre to block in reflected areas during official non-metallic gold painting guides.

The color can be blended into a darker brown base before brighter yellow and ivory highlights are introduced, creating the appearance of reflected light without metallic paint.

Blending Non-Metallic Gold

Mix Sunburst Ochre with the established brown shadow color to soften the transition around painted reflection shapes.

Brighter yellow can then be added toward the center of the reflection, followed by small pale highlights at the strongest points of light.

Yellow Armor and Cloth

Sunburst Ochre works as a dark base or shadow color for yellow armor, shields, machinery, cloth, banners, robes, and markings.

Build brighter yellow colors over the raised surfaces while allowing the ochre base to remain visible around recesses, undersides, folds, and damaged areas.

Leather, Parchment and Natural Materials

The earthy yellow tone can also be used on aged leather, parchment, rope, straw, dry grass, bone-adjacent details, wood, and other natural materials.

Combine it with brown shadows and pale highlights to adjust the warmth and age of the finished surface.

Mud and Wet Terrain Effects

An official Army Painter guide mixes Sunburst Ochre with gloss varnish to add puddles to a muddy miniature base.

Apply the mixture in irregular shapes after the underlying mud colors and varnish layers are dry. Keep the placement varied so the effect does not appear uniform.

Created for Grimdark Miniature Painting

The John Blanche Masterclass collection supports expressive, textured, gothic, and story-driven miniature painting.

Sunburst Ochre provides a muted yellow that works naturally with dark browns, weathered metals, dirty cloth, worn armor, aged terrain, and restrained color schemes.

Warpaints Fanatic Acrylic Formula

Warpaints Fanatic uses dense pigmentation in a premium resin base with proprietary stabilizers. The formula supports controlled coverage, smooth application, and consistent pigment distribution.

Sunburst Ochre can be diluted for layering, glazing, transitions, and detail work while retaining pigment dispersion.

Suggested Painting Uses

  • Dark yellow armor and machinery
  • Cloth, banners, robes, and painted markings
  • Non-metallic gold shadows and reflections
  • Aged leather, parchment, rope, and straw

  • Dry terrain, mud, puddles, and basing details
  • Warm underpainting and earthy color transitions
  • Grimdark and Blanchitsu-inspired miniatures

How to Use

  • Shake the bottle thoroughly for approximately 30 seconds.
  • Dispense a small amount onto a palette.
  • Check that the pigment is evenly mixed before applying it.
  • Add water or a suitable acrylic medium gradually when thinning.
  • Apply thin, controlled layers rather than one heavy coat.
  • Allow each layer to dry before adding brighter yellow colors.
  • Use a fine brush for reflections, edge highlights, and small details.
  • Shake the bottle again if pigment separation remains visible.

Paint-Type Notice: Sunburst Ochre is a standard Warpaints Fanatic acrylic. It should not be classified as a Speedpaint, wash, metallic paint, primer, or pre-thinned airbrush paint.

Color Notice: Screen settings, lighting, primer color, surrounding colors, and application thickness can affect how Sunburst Ochre appears. Refer to the physical bottle or a painted sample when an exact color match is required.

Application Notice: Yellow coverage and brightness are affected by the underlying primer or base color. Several thin layers may be required depending on the intended finish.
