Earthy Red-Brown for Weathered Miniatures

Ruddy Terra provides a warm red-brown color that fits naturally into worn, dirty, corroded, scorched, and story-driven miniature schemes.

It can be used as a solid acrylic color, diluted into thin stains, or applied in irregular patterns to add warmth and surface variation.

Rust Streaks and Corrosion

The Army Painter uses heavily watered-down Ruddy Terra to add rust streaks to metallic components in an official John Blanche painting guide.

Apply small amounts beneath rivets, joints, damaged edges, bolts, vents, and other areas where moisture and corrosion would naturally collect.

Layered Rust Texture

For a more developed rust effect, begin with an irregular darker brown layer, then stipple Ruddy Terra in smaller and less uniform patches.

Leaving portions of the darker color visible around the Ruddy Terra creates a layered appearance and helps the corrosion look embedded in the underlying surface.

Stippling and Sponge Weathering

Ruddy Terra can be applied with a worn brush, stippling brush, torn sponge, or fine detail brush depending on the scale and shape of the intended weathering.

Remove most of the paint before touching the model, then build the effect gradually to avoid creating large, uniform patches.

Non-Metallic Gold Base Color

In an official non-metallic gold recipe, The Army Painter adds a small amount of Ruddy Terra to Oak Brown to give the dark gold base more warmth and vibrancy.

Brighter ochre, yellow, and ivory colors can then be applied inside the planned reflection areas while the warm red-brown base remains visible in the deepest shadows.

Orange Environmental Reflections

Ruddy Terra can also be introduced into non-metallic gold as a warmer orange reflection.

Use it selectively rather than across the entire surface so the warm reflection reads as a change in surrounding light rather than a new base color.

Leather, Cloth and Worn Equipment

The earthy red-brown color also works on leather straps, boots, pouches, scabbards, cloth, uniforms, canvas, equipment cases, and other aged materials.

Add darker brown shading in recessed areas, then use lighter brown, orange, or tan colors to define worn edges and raised texture.

Terrain, Brick and Earth

Ruddy Terra can be applied to brickwork, masonry, scorched soil, clay, rubble, dry earth, damaged buildings, industrial terrain, and basing materials.

Combine it with darker earth colors and lighter dusty highlights to create visible depth and surface variation.

How to Use

• Shake the bottle thoroughly for approximately 30 seconds.
• Dispense a small amount to check the paint consistency.
• Shake again for several seconds if separation remains visible.
• Apply over a clean, dry, and primed surface.
• Add water or a compatible acrylic medium gradually when thinning.
• Apply thin, controlled layers instead of one heavy coat.
• Use irregular placement when creating rust or weathering.
• Allow each layer to dry before adding further texture or highlights.
