Atmospheric Shading for Grimdark Miniatures
Grimdark Shadow is designed to deepen recessed areas while adding a muted, atmospheric tone to the surrounding surface.
Its subtle green character works naturally in gothic, industrial, weathered, corrupted, and battle-worn color schemes without relying on a completely neutral black wash.
Shading Steel and Silver Metallics
Apply Grimdark Shadow over a dry metallic basecoat to add depth around rivets, armor joints, mechanical details, weapon components, vents, and recessed panels.
Once the wash has dried, restore selected raised edges with the original metallic color or a brighter silver highlight.
Subtle Green Tone for Aged Metal
The slight green tone adds more character than a conventional neutral black shade and works well with aged, tarnished, industrial, or fantasy-metal finishes.
It can also help visually connect silver metallics with nearby green, brown, and weathered surfaces.
Shading Wood and Brown Surfaces

Controlling the Wash

Building Stronger Shadows
Additional applications can be used to deepen selected recesses. Allow the previous layer to dry completely before adding more wash.
Concentrating later applications only in the deepest areas helps retain the original color on raised and exposed surfaces.
