Railway Weathering Pigments

Railway subjects collect different types of surface deposits depending on their location, materials, operating conditions, and surrounding environment. Pigments provide another way to add this variation over painted and weathered surfaces.

Build effects gradually so the original paint and detail remain visible where required.

Rust & Industrial Effects

Fresh Rust, Trackside Rust, and Deep Rust provide different rust-related color options that can be layered or used separately depending on the surface.

Industrial Dark Dust, Metal Slag, and Soot Black can support darker areas around machinery, depots, track infrastructure, freight facilities, and industrial scenery.

Earth & Ballast Effects

Rural Soil, Medium Earth, and Ballast Dust provide ground-oriented tones for tracks, embankments, yards, rural railway scenes, and diorama bases.

Several shades can be applied in separate areas to prevent groundwork from appearing as one uniform color.

Applying Pigments Dry

Pigments can be applied dry with a suitable brush for powdery dust, surface deposits, and subtle color variation. Start with small amounts and build the effect gradually.

Dry application also makes it easier to evaluate the placement before deciding whether the pigment needs to be fixed more securely.

Using Pigment Fixers

A compatible pigment fixer or binder can be used when the project requires the pigment to remain more firmly attached to the surface.

Applying liquid can change the appearance of the pigment, so testing the combination first can help avoid unexpected color or texture changes.
