Vallejo Leather Brown Spray Primer 28.014 (400ml Can) – Matte Hobby Spray for Miniatures and Scale Models

A warm brown base is one of the most useful starting points for fantasy armies, historical cavalry, leather gear, forest terrain, monsters, creatures, bases, and scale model details. Vallejo Leather Brown Spray Primer 28.014 gives hobby painters a fast, smooth way to prime and base coat models with a natural leather brown tone that works especially well for straps, saddles, boots, belts, wood, fur, earth, ruins, medieval scenery, and rugged tabletop projects.

This 400ml spray can is designed for metal, plastic, and resin miniatures or models. It works as both a primer-style base coat and a highly pigmented color layer, helping you cover larger surfaces quickly while keeping wood grain, fur texture, armor edges, leather folds, terrain detail, panel lines, rivets, and sculpted surfaces visible. The matte finish also creates a reliable surface for washes, drybrushing, highlights, weathering pigments, decals, and brush touch-ups.

Unlike a regular brush-on brown, Vallejo Leather Brown Spray Primer 28.014 is especially useful when you need consistent coverage across multiple figures or larger model parts. It can help create a unified starting tone for beastmen, cavalry units, fantasy adventurers, medieval structures, forest scenery, terrain bases, leather armor, wooden shields, and brown undercoats before adding shadows, glazes, edge highlights, or weathering effects.

Advanced Dual-Nozzle System

Vallejo Hobby Paint Sprays include two interchangeable nozzles, giving modelers more control depending on the project size.

  • Precision Low-Flow Nozzle: Useful for smaller miniatures, controlled passes, 28mm figures, detailed areas, and avoiding excess paint buildup.
  • Medium-Flow Nozzle: Better for larger surfaces such as scenery, terrain pieces, monsters, tanks, aircraft, armor panels, or batch-priming entire squads.
  • Fast Coverage: Helps speed up army painting, terrain building, and large project preparation.
  • Matte Self-Leveling Finish: Dries to a smooth surface that supports washes, drybrushing, highlights, and weathering.
  • Color Match Advantage: Designed to match equivalent Vallejo Game Color and Model Color tones, making brush touch-ups and transitions easier.

Why Leather Brown Is Useful on the Workbench

Leather Brown is a practical mid-brown tone that can work as a true color base or as an undercoat for darker, warmer, or more weathered finishes. It is especially useful when black primer would make the model too dark, or when white primer would make brown and leather tones look too flat or bright.

For miniature painters, Vallejo Leather Brown Spray Primer 28.014 can reduce the number of brush layers needed to reach a clean leather, wood, fur, or earth base. For scale modelers and terrain builders, it is useful for groundwork, crates, wooden structures, saddles, straps, medieval details, monster hides, forest bases, ruined buildings, and natural scenery.

Pro Tips from the Studio

For best results, shake the can thoroughly before use and test the spray on a spare part or piece of cardboard before applying it to the model. Use short, light passes instead of one heavy coat. This helps avoid pooling, preserves fine detail, and creates a smoother surface for later painting.

For leather straps, saddles, boots, and armor details, use Leather Brown as the base, then deepen shadows with a dark brown wash and add highlights with tan, ochre, or light brown. For forest terrain and medieval scenery, it also works well under drybrushed wood grain, earth textures, stone bases with warm dirt tones, and natural weathering effects.
