Paints for the Drybrush Technique

Drybrushing is a painting technique that uses a small amount of paint on the brush to emphasize raised details and surface texture. After removing most of the paint from the bristles, the brush is moved lightly across the surface so color is concentrated primarily on edges, raised shapes, and textured areas.

This technique can be used for highlighting, adding contrast, bringing out sculpted detail, and building selected dirt, wear, rust, dust, or metallic effects depending on the color being used.

Highlighting Raised Details & Edges

Light greys, white, sand tones, faded colors, and other lighter shades can be used to emphasize raised edges and sculpted detail. Applying the paint gradually helps control the amount of contrast between the highlighted areas and the underlying base color.

This approach can be useful on armor plates, bolts, rivets, panel edges, clothing folds, stonework, brickwork, machinery, terrain, and other surfaces with visible texture.

Rust, Dirt & Weathering Colors

Light Rust, Medium Rust, Rust, Earth, Dark Sand, Chipping, and related shades provide additional options for weathered surfaces.

These colors can be applied selectively to edges, textured surfaces, mechanical components, terrain, or other areas where the chosen tone matches the effect being represented.

Metallic Drybrushing

Light Metal, Gun Metal, and Brass allow the drybrush technique to be used on metallic details and equipment.

Light application along raised edges can help distinguish metallic surfaces, exposed details, mechanical components, tools, weapons, and other small features without covering the underlying paint completely.

Drybrushing Tips

• Load a small amount of paint onto the brush and remove most of it before touching the model.
• Use light strokes and build the color gradually instead of applying one heavy layer.
• Concentrate the brush on raised edges and textures when the goal is to highlight surface detail.
• Test the amount of paint on another surface before working on the finished model.
• Multiple related shades can be layered when additional tonal variation is desired.
