Cool Shadows for Desaturated Greens

Bramble Grove provides a darker, cooler starting point for muted green miniature schemes without relying on neutral black for the deepest shadows.

Keep the color visible inside recesses and lower-facing surfaces while progressively lighter green colors are applied to raised areas.

Desaturated Cool Greens Colour Progression

The Army Painter recommends Bramble Grove as an alternative to Medieval Forest in the Desaturated Cool Greens triad when a slightly cooler shadow is preferred.

This makes it useful for shifting an established green recipe toward a colder, moodier finish without changing the overall logic of the color progression.

Armor and Military Equipment

Bramble Grove works as a dark foundation for muted green armor, machinery, weapons, vehicles, storage cases, and military equipment.

Apply progressively lighter greens to upper panels and edges while leaving Bramble Grove visible around joints, undersides, panel lines, and damaged areas.

Cloth, Cloaks and Uniforms

Use Bramble Grove on uniforms, cloaks, robes, fatigues, banners, webbing, canvas, and other fabric surfaces where a cool dark green foundation is needed.

Build lighter desaturated greens onto raised folds while preserving the darker color inside creases and beneath overlapping fabric.

Creature Skin and Organic Details

Bramble Grove can provide a shadow base for monsters, reptiles, amphibians, alien creatures, diseased skin, scales, and other organic miniature surfaces.

Layer muted green, yellow-green, grey-green, or pale colors across raised muscles, facial features, scales, and textured areas.

Foliage and Natural Terrain

The restrained green tone also works naturally on foliage, roots, moss, vines, dead vegetation, forest terrain, undergrowth, and scenic basing.

Combine it with earthy browns and lighter desaturated greens to build natural variation without making every plant or terrain element equally bright.

Weathered and Grimdark Surfaces

Bramble Grove fits naturally beside worn metallics, dirty browns, faded ochres, cool greys, and weathered terrain.

It can be used beneath scratches, chips, grime, dust, and other weathering while still remaining visible as the main green shadow.

Layering from Shadow to Highlight

Start with Bramble Grove across the darkest green areas, then introduce lighter colors onto progressively smaller raised surfaces.

Keeping part of the original shadow visible between the midtone and deepest recesses helps the model retain depth and separation.

Mixing Intermediate Green Tones

Mix Bramble Grove with the next lighter green when a smoother transition is required.

Increase the lighter color gradually across successive layers and reduce the painted area toward the final highlights.

Glazing and Shadow Reinforcement

Thin Bramble Grove gradually with water or a compatible acrylic medium when reinforcing green shadows over an established color.

Several controlled glazes provide more control than one heavy layer and allow the underlying midtone to remain visible.

Warpaints Fanatic Acrylic Formula

Warpaints Fanatic uses a pigment-dense acrylic formulation set in a premium resin base with proprietary stabilizers for strong pigmentation, coverage, and smooth application.

The formula can be thinned significantly while retaining pigment dispersion, making it suitable for layering, glazing, blending, and controlled detail work.

Suggested Painting Uses

  • Muted and desaturated green armor
  • Cool shadows in green color schemes
  • Uniforms, cloaks, robes, and canvas
  • Creature skin, scales, monsters, and aliens
  • Foliage, roots, vines, moss, and forest terrain
  • Vehicles, machinery, weapons, and military equipment
  • Atmospheric glazing and shadow reinforcement
  • John Blanche and grimdark-inspired miniature painting

How to Use

  • Shake the bottle thoroughly for approximately 30 seconds.
  • Dispense a small amount onto a palette.
  • Check that the pigment is evenly mixed before applying it.
  • Apply thin, controlled coats over a clean, dry, and primed surface.
  • Add water or a compatible acrylic medium gradually when thinning.
  • Allow each layer to dry before adding lighter colors.
  • Keep Bramble Grove visible in the deepest shadow areas.
  • Use a fine brush for recesses, folds, edges, and small details.

Building Cooler Green Shadows

Use Bramble Grove when an established green color scheme needs a slightly cooler foundation than Medieval Forest.

Concentrate it inside armor joints, cloth folds, undersides, mechanical recesses, and lower-facing surfaces before applying the lighter green stages.

Highlight Placement

Apply lighter greens to upward-facing armor panels, raised cloth folds, prominent creature features, foliage tips, sharp corners, and other areas receiving more light.

Keep the brightest color limited to selected focal points so Bramble Grove continues to provide visible depth and atmosphere.

Paint-Type Notice: Bramble Grove is classified under John Blanche Masterclass – Warpaints Fanatic. It should not be classified as a wash, metallic paint, effects paint, primer, or pre-thinned airbrush paint.

Triad Notice: The newer John Blanche colors were not originally created as fixed members of the Flexible Triad System. The Army Painter later tested them alongside existing triads and recommends Bramble Grove as a slightly cooler replacement for Medieval Forest in Desaturated Cool Greens.

Color Notice: Screen settings, lighting, primer color, surrounding colors, and application thickness can affect how Bramble Grove appears. Refer to the physical bottle or a painted sample when an exact color match is required.

Application Notice: Dark green shadows are easiest to control when lighter colors are built gradually over Bramble Grove rather than covering the entire shadow layer at once.

Safety Notice: Follow all instructions and precautions printed on the physical product label. This product is not suitable for children under 14 years of age.
