SprayGunner is the Grand Prize Sponsor of the 2026 Stan Winston School Halloween Costume Contest, supporting a community of makers who turn imaginative characters into handmade costumes.
Hosted by Stan Winston School of Character Arts, the annual contest welcomes Halloween costumes of all shapes and sizes. This year’s winner will receive a Grand Prize Pack valued at over $1,800, including more than $1,400 in products from SprayGunner, a one-year Unlimited Subscription to the school, and an Artist Spotlight on its blog.
Behind a finished costume are hours of sculpting, building, fitting, and painting. The contest gives creators a place to share that work with a community connected to some of the most recognizable practical effects characters in cinema. Submissions close on November 3, 2026.
The Stan Winston Legacy: From Movie Creatures to a New Generation of Makers
Stan Winston helped bring the characters and creatures of The Terminator, Aliens, Predator, and Jurassic Park to the screen. His career spanned four decades and earned him four Academy Awards, establishing a lasting influence on practical character effects.
Those creations brought together sculpture, makeup, fabrication, mechanics, and painting. Artists gave imaginary characters physical surfaces, expressions, and movement: details that helped audiences believe in what they were seeing.
Stan Winston School of Character Arts continues that educational legacy by connecting aspiring creators with professional artists and technical specialists. Through online instruction, students can study the processes behind character creation and apply them to their own work.
Learning the Craft Behind the Character
The school covers disciplines including sculpture, mold making, fabrication, makeup effects, puppet making, mechanical effects, and painting. Its courses include articulated monster mask construction and character transformations using prosthetics, paint, and hair work.
A handmade Halloween costume can bring several of these disciplines together. A sculpted mask, a fabricated creature suit, or a carefully painted surface gives makers a practical way to explore how materials and techniques shape a character.
An Annual Halloween Tradition in the School’s Creative Community
The Halloween Costume Contest is part of the school’s ongoing community activity. Its forum preserves past contest categories, including the 2025 Halloween Costume Contest, alongside the current competition. These archives let visitors explore earlier submissions and the variety of costumes shared by participating makers.
The 2026 contest continues that focus on handmade work. The organizer welcomes costumes of different shapes and sizes, with one central requirement: the submission must be primarily the work of the entrant’s own hands.
Participants can submit up to three entries, each in its own forum post. When a costume is based on another artist’s character or concept, the original artist must be credited. Entries may also be featured on the school’s social media during the contest, with appropriate credit.
