Jacquard Dye-Na-Flow Exciter Pack
This high chroma, highly transparent liquid fabric paint is permanent on any porous or semi-porous surface, including natural and synthetic fabrics, leather and wood. In many ways, it simulates a true dye: Dye-Na-Flow spreads on fabric until it is thoroughly absorbed and even, sinking into the fibers like a dye instead of sitting on the surface like thicker paints and inks. The colors are super vibrant & washfast and will not change the feel of the fabric, making it a powerful tool whenever true dyes are impractical. A uniquely versatile fluid acrylic, Dye-Na-Flow is used for a diverse range of applications, from silk painting to wood staining.
Dye-Na-Flow should be heat set with an iron, heat press, heat gun, or dryer for maximum permanence (see instructions for details). Alternatively, use with the AirFix Additive to eliminate the need for heat setting.

General Instructions
- Read through all instructions before starting your project.
- Apply to pre-washed fabric using a brush, squirt bottle, sponge, or airbrush.
-
To heat set:
- Allow to dry completely.
- Iron the reverse side for at least three minutes at the highest temperature suited for the fabric.
- Alternative: If heat setting is impractical, use Jacquard Airfix and allow to air cure.
- Washing Instructions: Machine or hand wash in cool water after heat setting.
Techniques
Resist Technique
This technique creates barriers between colors, similar to stained glass windows. The resist prevents colors from blending together.
Steps:
- Draw your design on the fabric using an auto-fade pen.
- Pour Jacquard Water-Based Resist or Jacquard Gutta into a plastic applicator bottle with a metal tip.
- Hold the bottle like a pencil and gently squeeze until the resist begins to flow. Practice on scrap fabric first.
- Draw your pattern steadily to avoid gaps in the resist lines (gaps will cause paint to bleed through).
-
Check resist lines: Ensure they penetrate through to the back of the fabric. Fill in any gaps if necessary.
- Let resist dry completely (use a hairdryer to speed up drying).
-
Mix and apply paint:
- Dye-Na-Flow is available in 30 colors but can be mixed to create custom shades.
- Use full-strength for bright colors or mix with water (up to 25%) for softer shades.
-
Painting the fabric:
- Dip your brush in the paint and apply about ½ inch away from the resist line.
- The dye will naturally spread to the resist line.
- For large areas, work quickly and always paint wet-to-wet. Avoid going over dry areas.
-
Final Steps:
- Let dry completely.
- Heat set: Iron reverse side for at least three minutes at the highest fabric-safe temperature.
- Alternative: Use Jacquard Airfix and allow to air cure if heat setting is impractical.
Salt Technique
This method creates beautiful starburst effects by sprinkling salt over wet Dye-Na-Flow paint.
Steps:
- Apply Dye-Na-Flow to the fabric using a brush, squirt bottle, or sponge.
- Immediately sprinkle salt over the wet fabric (the salt absorbs dye as it dries).
- Let the fabric dry completely before brushing off the salt.
-
Heat set:
- Iron the reverse side for at least three minutes at the highest safe temperature.
- Alternative: Use Jacquard Airfix and allow to air cure if heat setting is impractical.
Sun Printing
A fun and easy technique for creating ghost-like images on fabric using found objects, leaves, or paper cutouts.
Steps:
- Thoroughly wet the fabric with clean water using a brush.
- Apply Dye-Na-Flow onto the wet fabric.
- While still wet, place objects (leaves, cutouts, etc.) on the fabric’s surface.
- Ensure the objects stay in close contact with the fabric for sharp edges.
- Use weights if necessary to keep them from blowing away.
- Set the fabric in direct sunlight.
- Tip: If working with large fabric, place it in the sun before adding objects to avoid drying too quickly.
- Leave in the sun for at least an hour. Then, remove objects to reveal a lighter image in their shape.
-
Heat set:
- Iron the reverse side for at least three minutes at the highest fabric-safe temperature.
- Alternative: Use Jacquard Airfix and allow to air cure if heat setting is impractical.
